Intentional Social Media Use: Tools, Not Traps
The Default Is Not Neutral
Social media used without intentional design defaults to the platform's design -- which is built to maximise time on platform through engagement optimization, not user wellbeing. Intentional use reclaims agency by deciding in advance how, when, and for what purpose the platform is accessed.
The JOMO Framework
Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) is the deliberate acceptance of reduced social media engagement in exchange for reclaimed time and reduced comparative anxiety. It does not mean abandoning platforms -- it means releasing the compulsion to stay current, maintain a specific presence, or consume all available content.
Practical Design Principles
- Use cases, not habits: define specific use cases for each platform (staying in contact with X group, following domain Y for professional learning). Access the platform for those use cases; leave when they are met.
- Scheduled access: one to three fixed windows per day, with defined end times. Not open tabs or background apps.
- Curate ruthlessly: unfollow any account that consistently produces envy, anxiety, or outrage. Follow accounts that provide genuine value for your defined use cases.
- Produce more than consume: shifting the ratio from consumption to creation changes the relationship with the platform from passive recipient to active participant.
Tools, Not Traps in Practice
Choose one platform and apply the use-case principle to it for one month. Identify your specific use case, define your access windows, and curate your feed for that use case only. At the end of the month, evaluate whether the platform is serving you or you are serving it.
