Why Ambitious Systems Collapse

The most common failure in personal systems design is overbuilding. A new morning routine with eight steps, a productivity system with five daily reviews, a training programme that leaves no rest days -- these demand willpower that does not last. When one element fails, the whole structure often collapses.

The Minimum Viable Routine

A minimum viable routine (MVR) is the smallest version of a practice that still delivers meaningful benefit. It is not the ideal version. It is the floor -- the version you can execute on your worst day, when motivation is absent and time is short.

The MVR principle: define the minimum that counts, then do at least that. Good days exceed the minimum; hard days meet it. The consistency rate across both is what produces results.

Designing Your Floor

  • Training MVR: ten minutes of movement. Not the full session -- just ten minutes. Most days, ten minutes becomes thirty. The days it does not, ten minutes still happened.
  • Reading MVR: two pages. The resistance to opening the book disappears when the commitment is that small.
  • Morning routine MVR: one glass of water, three minutes of quiet. Everything else is bonus.

Scaling Up Without Breaking Down

Once an MVR is stable over four to six weeks, the floor can be raised slightly. The principle remains: never raise the floor past what you can maintain on a difficult day.

Doing Less, Consistently in Practice

A two-minute practice done 300 days a year outperforms a 60-minute practice done 30 days a year. The MVR is not lowering ambition -- it is choosing consistency over intensity as the primary driver of long-term results.
